IWI – International Welding Inspector
IWI (International Welding Inspector), or “Svetskontrollant” in Swedish, is the training course for those who want to learn how to inspect welding and at the same time gain a more detailed understanding of welding. The training course is approved by Svetskommissionen [the Swedish Welding Commission], which is the Swedish organisation for IIW (International Institute of Welding) training courses in Sweden.
Contents of the training course
The IWI training course is divided into 2 sections.
The first section (WT – Weld Technology) deals with weld technology. It lasts for 4 weeks and consists of 4 modules (parts).
A theory test is taken after each module.
The second section (WI – Weld Inspection) consists only of training in weld inspection and lasts 2.5 weeks.
People with an IWS, IWT or IWE diploma can start Part 2 immediately without doing the first part of the training course.
Training levels
There are two levels of IWI. The normal level is IWI-S (Standard) and the higher level is IWI-C (Comprehensive).
Entry requirements IWI-S
Requirements for admission to the IWI-S training course consist of either:
• 3 years’ sheet metal and welding training at sixth-form level and
• 3 years’ practical experience of welding or 5 years’ practical experience of welding.
Persons with an IWS diploma qualify for IWI-S and can start Part 2 of the training course (WI) immediately.
Entry requirements IWI-C
The minimum requirements for admission to the IWI-C programme consist of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or an IWT/IWE diploma.
• Persons with an IWT/IWE diploma can start Part 2 of the training course (WI) immediately.
• Persons with an IWI-S diploma and at least two years’ professional experience as an IWI-S can study for IWI-C after completing a knowledge test.
